🎓 My CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) Certification Journey

This document outlines the timeline, resources, and strategy I used to prepare for the CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) exam. My path was unconventional, but it ultimately led to success.

🗓️ Key Dates & Milestones

My journey for the Security+ began right after tackling another exam. Here is the timeline:

  • September 30th, 2025: The point of no return. I purchased the Security+ (SY0-701) exam voucher.
  • October 10th, 2025: Things got real. I officially booked my exam date, which lit a fire under me to get serious about my weak areas.
  • October 16th, 2025: I sat for the previous exam. With that experience fresh in my mind, I was ready to focus entirely on the Security+.

📚 Study Resources & Strategy

My study approach evolved over time. I started with passive learning and transitioned to active testing, which I found to be far more effective for me.

Phase 1: The Exploratory Round

I initially sampled several top-tier resources. While I didn't complete any of them from start to finish, I later realized that their unique perspectives gave me a well-rounded view of all five exam domains.

  • Jason Dion's Udemy Course: I started here but moved on after completing about half of the course.
  • Professor Messer's YouTube Playlist: A fantastic resource, but I again pivoted to another resource halfway through.
  • Mike Chappell's Guide (from Amazon): I read a few chapters but felt the need to start actively testing my knowledge rather than just reading.

Phase 2: The Turning Point (Practice Exams)

After booking my exam on October 08, my strategy shifted entirely to practice tests. This active recall method was the single most important part of my preparation.

My primary resources for practice questions were:

  1. CompTIA Security+ Study Guide with over 500 Practice Test Questions: Exam SY0-701 (Sybex Study Guide), 9th Edition
    • Authors: Mike Chapple, David Seidl
  2. CompTIA® Security+® SY0-701 Certification Guide: Master cybersecurity fundamentals and pass the SY0-701 exam on your first attempt, Third Edition
    • Author: Ian Neil

These books were critical for identifying my weak spots and getting comfortable with the style of the exam questions.

✨ My Key Takeaway

The "perfect" study plan is the one that works for you. Don't be afraid to mix and match resources to keep yourself engaged. For me, the crucial shift was moving from passively consuming content to actively challenging myself with practice questions. That made all the difference.
